In June 2019 researchers from China assessed different cleaning methods for removing sunscreen. A total of 20 individuals were included in the study. Each individual applied either a non-waterproof sunscreen or a waterproof sunscreen which was then removed by either water alone, a foam cleanser or a cleansing oil. Results showed that using either a foam cleanser or cleansing oil was the most effective method of removing the non-waterproof sunscreen whereas cleansing oil was the most effective for removing the waterproof sunscreen. However, a further analysis revealed that the cleansing oil appears cause less skin irritation and dryness than the foam cleanser. Further research is required to assess other types of sunscreens and washing products.
