In March 2018 researchers from the USA published their review highlighting the dangers of gel manicures. They stated that the specially formulated nail polish used during a gel manicure must undergo curing under light-based units and that the majority of curing lamps emit high-intensity ultraviolet A. This can cause skin damage and increase the risk for skin cancers. The researchers therefore called for consumer education and recommended that individuals undergoing a gel manicure either apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen or use nitrile examination gloves in order to prevent photoaging and skin cancer.
