In April 2017 researchers from Turkey published the results of their study to assess whether the addition of Pilates-based exercises to a standard exercise programme undertaken following a total knee arthroplasty improved an individual’s quality of life and balance. 17 individuals undertook a standard exercise programme following discharge from hospital with a further 17 individuals undertaking the same standard exercise programme but with the addition of Pilates-based exercises. All individuals underwent evaluation on the day of discharge from hospital and again following completion of the 6-week exercise programme. Results showed that the differences between pre- and post-treatment balance scores were significantly greater in the Pilates-based exercise group when compared to those undertaking the standard exercise programme alone. In addition, those undertaking the Pilates based exercises were also found to have better physical function and less restriction in what they could achieve.
