In January 2019 researchers from Spain published their review of the medical scientific literature to assess the effect of Pilates in individuals with multiple sclerosis. A total of 14 studies were identified. The quality of the studies was considered poor in five and good in three, with a further four ranging from “poor” to “fair”. Results showed that quality of life, self-perceived fatigue, balance confidence and walking ability all appeared to improve following Pilates. Depression was not influenced by Pilates and in addition it did not appear to be more effective than other exercise programmes for improving functional mobility, cardiorespiratory fitness, fatigue and quality of life. Further high-quality research is therefore required.
