In March 2018 researchers from the UK, Nigeria and China published their review of the medical scientific literature to assess the effect of a low-glycaemic index diet in individuals with diabetes type 2. Studies involving patients with gestational and type 1 diabetes were excluded, as were observational studies, which left nine articles included in the review. The results showed that the low-glycaemic index diet significantly improved HbA1c levels when compared to a high cereal fibre diet and a high wheat fibre diet. Improvements in fasting blood glucose was also seen in individuals consuming a low glycaemic index diet when compared to diets with a higher glycaemic index.
