In April 2019 researchers from Spain assessed the effect of the Mediterranean diet and physical activity on bone health in women with fibromyalgia. 95 women were included in the study. Body composition was assessed and information on the Mediterranean diet and physical activity collected via questionnaires. Bone mass density was estimated via ultrasound. Results showed that lean mass and the Mediterranean diet were consistently associated with bone mass density, supporting the view that they both play leading roles in maintaining bone health in women with fibromyalgia. The researchers concluded by stating that exercise programmes to maximize lean mass and good adherence to the Mediterranean diet should be considered to prevent the development of osteoporosis in women with fibromyalgia.
