In October 2018 researchers from the USA published the results of their study to assess the effect of the MIND diet on the incidence and progression of Parkinson’s disease in older adults. MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. A total of 706 individuals, aged 59 -97 years, with no history of Parkinson’s disease were included in the study and followed for an average period of 4 years. Each individual was assessed annually for the presence of Parkinson’s disease. Information on adherence to the MIND diet were collected via a food frequency questionnaire and a MIND diet score produced. Results showed that higher MIND diet scores were associated with a decreased risk and a slower rate of progression of Parkinson’s disease. It was also seen that the Mediterranean diet food items were slightly associated with a reduced progression of Parkinson’s disease whereas the DASH diet food items were not associated with either risk or progression of Parkinson’s disease.
